The Hen Also Rises

The briefest of loving nods to that brilliant art festival in the desert that I sadly could not make the trek to this year... hope all the Burners had their worlds expanded once again. Since most of my crew lacked the resources to get out there this time, we did a grand social experiment to see if we could capture the spirit of the Playa at home... and created Burning Hen 2009.

About thirty-five people came together in the woods, wore costumes, built theme camps, cooked outdoors, and made a general ruckus for three days. It was like a miniature parody of Burning Man - we had porno-potties, samba and accordion workshops, Funk Farm Dance Camp, a Wild West Hula Hoop show, the Redwood Nest Theater playing movies, a few great dj's, and a stunning fire~dancer...

We had filthy spoken word poetry performances, the Chicken Beak Gummy Worm Glory Hole, night croquet, Super-Soaker Twister Camp, amazing large-scale art and a beautiful Hen that it pained us just a little to burn.

We truly did not want this to be just another party, so we created a Survival Guide and list of rules that seemed overwhelming at first. We locked up the house for the duration, didn't allow ins-and-outs, no cell phones, no laptops, no beer or coffee runs, no long goodbyes. But setting these boundaries allowed everyone who agreed to them the ability to step outside their day-to-day reality, which is really what we're all craving when we go to the Playa.

Amazingly, everyone agreed that we tapped in to the sheer joy and freedom you experience on the Playa, without leaving our own back yard. We were all so excited to bring gifts of all kinds to share, and we created our own little community. And so we learned something today, my loves... the spirit of Burning Man is actually inside us.

Thanks to all my beloved nest-mates for the beautiful time, and thanks to Paul G. and Miss M. for the gorgeous pictures.

I understand the ache about missing something you love to do every year - but it sounds/looks as though you had a fantastic time. I was wondering if you had gone to BM & when we would get the update.

Awesome. It's not easy getting people to party for a full day let alone three. You must have awesome party friends!
